Smithfield Foods, Inc. has announced the appointment of George Richter to the new position of president and chief operating officer of its pork group and named Joseph W. Luter IV as executive vice president of Smithfield Foods as part of a senior management reorganisation.

Richter has spent most of his career at Farmland Foods, where he served as president since Smithfield acquired the company in October 2003. In his new role, effective April 28, the presidents of Smithfield Foods’ five pork processing companies will report to him.

Luter, currently president of Smithfield Packing Company, will concentrate on sales and marketing in his new role as an executive vice president of Smithfield Foods.

James Sbarro will take over form Richter as president of Farmland. He has been senior vice president of sales, marketing, research and development at the company since 1999.

Tim Schellpeper, senior vice president of operations at Farmland, will assume Luter’s position at Smithfield Packing Company. He has been with Farmland for 17 years.

“These managers will help in the coordination of the pork subsidiaries to better serve our continually-growing retail and foodservice customers,” said C. Larry Pope, Smithfield Foods president and chief executive officer. “There are big opportunities across the organisation to improve our operations and financial performance. This new team will be focused on developing these opportunities and maximizing the enormous potential of this company.”
