Smithfield Ferme, a subsidiary of Smithfield foods, is set to invest roughly $159 million in Romania, a country referred to by the company’s chairman Joseph Luter III as the “Iowa of Europe”.
The aim of the investment is to double the number of hog production farms it operates. “We now operate 25 farms, but we have 10 to 15 farms under our authorisation and 10 under construction,” Bogdan Mihail, general manager of Smithfield Ferme, said.
