Russian threat to quit meat imports

06-11-2006 | |

Russia has threatened not to allow EU meat imports as from January 1st, 2007.

Sergey Dankwert, Russian veterinary spokesman, said that the entry of Bulgaria and Romania was the cause of this threat as in these countries both pig and sheep diseases are still common, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Dankwert was quoted to say that his country fears illegal meat could eventually travel into Russia after having obtained fake documents in other EU countries. Russia therefore requires guarantees this will not happen.

Both Russian and European veterinary specialists will meet later in the week to discuss the matter.
