Russian imports of pigs greatly increase

10-07-2009 | |

In the period of 2005-2008, Russian imports of pigs increased 700 percent – up to 600,000 pigs. It turned out that the pig livestock importing to Russia was much cheaper, than that of pig meat.

Over the first five months of 2009, 367,000 pigs have been imported to the country. According to forecasts of the National Union of Pig Producers, this year over 1 million pigs can be imported to Russia, compared with only 25,000 pigs imported in 2003.
