Russia to ban EU animal imports

23-11-2006 | |

Russia has told the European Union (EU) that the country intends to ban all animal product imports from the EU as from January 1.

Moscow claims that the EU’s new members Bulgaria and Romania have poor animal health standards, the European Commission (EC) said.

The decision, already communicated to Brussels in the beginning of November, complicates the touchy relations before a summit between president Vladimir Putin and EU leaders tomorrow.

Poland ban

Russia already banned meat and several plant imports from Poland. Unless that ban is lifted, the Poles will continue to obstruct new Russia-EU agreement talks to tighten political and economic ties.

Both Bulgaria and Romania did recently step up hygiene standards, funded by the EU.
