Researchers discover new highly pathogenic PRRS strain
At a farm in Belarus, a new highly pathogenic strain of the Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) virus has been found.
Results of a study into the new strain were made public recently by researchers of the University of Ghent, Belgium, led by Dr Hans Nauwynck. The new strain, from the sub-type 3 of European strains, is considered to cause severe clinical signs.
East European PRRSV isolates have been found to be of the European genotype but form different sub-types.
Fertility and respiratory problems
The virus was found on a farm with fertility and respiratory problems. Apart from severe clinical signs, the virus was also observed to be present in a higher density than is commonly found with PRRS in the pigs’ blood samples, be them from North American or European genotypes.
In addition, in lungs, tonsils and nose swabs, a higher quantity of virus has been found. The researchers indicate a higher level of awareness is required.
