Record for German slaughterhouses

02-11-2006 | |

Abattoirs in Germany broke a record by slaughtering a number of 885,000 pigs in the second week of October.

This increase is partly due to growing pork export figures.

The last record – 872,000 pigs – dated only from last September. According the German bureau for statistics this year until September 1st, 32.6 million pigs were sent for slaughter.

This means an extra 1.6 animals or a 3% year-on-year rise.

The pig meat production increased with 95,000 tonnes to a total of just over 3 million tonnes.

On average, each week 800,000 pigs are slaughtered in Germany – this is an 11% increase when compared to 2004.
