Pig producers in Hungary have announced that they will begin protesting next month against declines in pig numbers due to cheaper imports and higher feed prices.
From over 10 million at the end of the 1980s, the Hungarian pig population has now fallen to a mere 4m and could fall lower to 1.5 million.
Head of the pork section of the farmers association MOSZ, Illes Meszaros, stressed the necessity of ensuring the survival of the pig industry.
The Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture has promised Ft 4 billion (€16m) in subsidies next year to alleviate losses.
