Production index SMS: 23.30 piglets/sow/year

US swine benchmarking service Swine Management Services (SMS), located in Fremont, NE, released its production index for 2008. On average, its farms weaned 23.30 piglets/sow/year.

The database encompasses 585 farms and 1,175,053 females with significant participation from customers of every major swine genetic company.

SMS’ top 10% of herds averaged 27.31 piglets weaned/sow/year.

For the third consecutive year, according to a press release, Genesus Genetics customers had the number one herd at 30.80 piglets weaned/sow/year in 2008. The genetics company “supplied eight of the top 10 SMS herds, 15 of the top SMS 20 herds,” the press release told.
