Podcast: Celebrating swine nutritionist, Dr Bradley senior

In this 3-part, 24th edition of the Real P3 podcast, Dr Casey Bradley celebrates the 70th birthday of her father, swine nutritionist Craig Bradley who has dedicated 3 decades to the pork industry. As the inspiration behind her becoming a swine nutritionist herself, she says he likes to get the job done and done right.

The Real P3 podcast series is an initiative where pork professionals from around the world are interviewed about challenges and solutions in their day-to-day work.

Part 1: Learning from Dr Craig Bradley, with over 30 decades experience

In part 1 of this 3-part series, Dr Casey Bradley speaks to her dad, Craig Bradley, whose career in the swine industry spans over 30 years and began when he was still at school while working for a local farmer. He discusses the reasons, including land prices, that drove pig production in the 1990s to move from an outdoor, pasture-based system to confinement. “These confinement barns are not healthy […] as they think they are.”

He goes on to discuss the mindset of raising pigs outdoors, labour and management practises. Dr Bradley also asks her dad some interesting questions, including, ‘How do we get kids interested in agriculture?’ and, ‘What mistakes have we made as an industry?’ In the coming weeks, part 2 and part 3 of this 24th episode will be highlighted.

In the previous weeks, Pig Progress published earlier episodes of the Real P3 podcast series:
