Moredun Scientific validates Streptococcus suis disease model for porcine studies

06-01-2012 | |

Moredun Scientific has recently completed the validation of a Streptococcus suis Serotype 2 disease model in weaner piglets for use in vaccine and therapeutic efficacy studies.

Streptococcus suis is a bacterial pathogen of pigs and of major importance to the global pig industry due to the economic impact of disease outbreaks and the welfare implications for infected herds.
Serotype 2 has been identified as being responsible for the majority of the infections in diseased pigs and there is no licensed vaccine for the disease.

David Reddick, Head of Animal Health at Moredun Scientific, commented: “We are pleased to extend our disease model portfolio to offer a highly effective model of S.suis infection to our animal health clients supporting their efforts to prevent and control the disease.”

Moredun Scientific is a contract research organization providing research and testing services to the animal health, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Client studies are conducted in the extensive animal accommodation and containment facilities available at the Moredun site.
