200,000 tonnes of frozen pork meat from three Brazilian companies will make its way to China over the coming five years, it has been reported.
The announcement by the Chinese government is seen as a breakthrough for Brazil, as it is the first time that pork meat from Brazil will be exported to China. For a long time now Brazilian pig farmers have been wanting to see exports make its way to China. Brazil’s customers are mainly the European Union and Russia.
In November last year, the abattoirs were under inspection by a Chinese sanitary delegation. Three out of 13 abattoirs were chosen to export pork to China. “We were expecting more, but it’s a beginning” stated Pedro de Camargo Neto, president of Brazil’s Pork production and export industry, Abipecs.
Marfrig Alimentos Marfig Alimentos, the world’s biggest meat corporation has stated that through its subsidiary Keystone Foods it would be partake in two joint ventures with Chinese companies for opportunities to supply food products and meet the growing demand for distribution in the Chinese market.
China is the world’s leading producer and consumer of pork, consuming 50% of the pork produced globally.
