Innovation award for Omega-3 enhanced pork

The 2007 Canadian Agri-Food Award of Excellence for Innovation has been awarded to Prairie Orchard Farms, Manitoba for its Omega-3 Enhanced Pork.

The award is given for outstanding achievement and leadership in the Canadian agriculture and agri-food industry.

Feed formula
The prize-winning type of pork was developed by Willy Hoffman, president of Prairie Orchard Farms together with a team of researchers. It is made up of a feed formula which allows omega-3 to be absorbed into the muscle tissue through a pig’s diet.

Prairie states that approximately 0.4 g of omega-3 are contained in a 100 g serving of ham.

It is the first meat producer to gain the approval of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the USDA for its Omega-3 Enhanced Pork. Building on this success, the company is now exploring Omega-3 enhanced chicken.
