Hundreds of pigs die at burning Canadian farm

20-07-2007 | |

Flames tore through two large barns in Chilliwack, Canada, wiping out 700 pigs and devastating two farmers just two weeks before they planned to leave the business.

“We tried to save them in the one barn, and opened the door, but it was filled with smoke … I thought: It’s too late, my pigs are dead” commented Nancy Pannekoek, who owns the farm with her husband.

The Chilliwack fire department quickly sent about 50 firefighters – roughly half its force – to battle the flames on the Adams Road farm. But neighbour Sylvia Mosterman said the thick smoke that blanketed the area woke up locals long before the sirens did.
