Hundreds of piglets involved in crash

19-12-2006 | |

A semi-trailered vehicle had an accident in Delaware County, resulting in a 2-hour road closure and the released of an unknown amount of piglets into the wild, killing approximately 335, according to Sheriff’s Department Sgt., Dave Spence.

Rural firefighters and volunteers saved most of the 1,975 pigs in the crash.
Nearby hog farmer, Kaye Whitehead, said the pigs weigh 9 – 14 pounds and were most likely around two weeks old.

Pigs were found in a nearby corn field and Whitehead estimated less than a dozen baby pigs remain in the area, however, chances of survival would be limited because of their young age.
