Harper doubles pig unit for research

Harper Adams University College is joining forces with JSR Genepacker 90s and will invest over £500,000 to improve facilities and stock and encourage future research projects for the market sector.

Prof Wynne Jones, principal at the college, said the investment was necessary to adapt to new pressures and market changes. The pig unit at Harper Adams will double in size from 120 to 240 sows, with new dry sow and farrowing units being built in two phases.

Current research
Current research projects include nitrogen retention, feed additives and immune system enhancement, and it is hoped these will soon be joined by additional projects as the new facilities are introduced. JSR has announced that it will be sponsoring a technician’s post at the college for a two-year period.
