This year will show an increased meat production of 2.3% to about 283 million tons globally, according to the United Nations FAO agrifoods agency report.
China and Asia in total, will account for two-thirds of the expansion. As expected, countries high economic growth is supporting the rise in per capita meat consumption.
Positive producer returns in pork product during the past few years have led to expansion in many countries. However, the recent surge in feed prices is expected to temper growth in global pork production to just more than 3% in 2007, which will be a new high at 110.7 million tons.
