The EU’s largest pork consumer, Germany, has reported a decline in pig butchering: 0.8 % in the first six months through June. The decline is the German industry’s first in seven years, Bloomberg reports.
The number of butchered pigs slipped by 237,000 to 28.8 million, falling for the first time since 2005, the office wrote in a statement on its website today. Pork production fell 1.1 % to 2.7 million tonnes, the report showed.
Poultry meat production rose by 12,700 tonnes, or 1.8 %, to a record 713,000 tonnes, the statistics office said.
