Germany’s new agricultural minister, Ilse Aigner, made her first public appearance at the EuroTier show on Tuesday. She emphasised a need for relevant parties to cooperate in order to keep Germany’s agriculture on track.
Aigner was appointed as Germany’s new minister of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection after her predecessor Horst Seehofer was elected to become Prime Minister of the German state of Bavaria in the end of October.
Aigner, aged 44, and from a christian-democratic background, promised in her first public speech to be seeking dialogue and transparency.
Multifunctional
She announced that her policy would focus on three aspects. Firstly, she said to encourage the enhancement of a multifunctional agriculture – e.g. by encouraging producers to develop bioenergy initiatives to meet demands of society’s increasing demand to energy sources.
In addition, Aigner said that she would support initiatives to enhance quality and quantity of production.
Thirdly, the ministry will focus on encouraging scientific research – a field that will receive €280 million until 2012.
