FDA opens first offices in China

26-11-2008 | |

The US Food and Drug Administration is officially opening offices in Chinese cities of Beijing, Guangzhou and Shanghai. The establishment of the offices in China and elsewhere around the world has been in development for several months, but the recent contamination of food products and feed with melamine has heightened interest in the endeavour.

“A permanent FDA presence in China will help us address the challenges presented by globalisation,” said Andrew von Eschenbach, commissioner of the FDA. “We look forward to working with the Chinese government and manufacturers to ensure that FDA standards for safety and manufacturing quality are met before products ship to the United States.”

The FDA is working towards a presence in five geographic regions: China, India, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.
