The better implementation of the existing EU legislation on the welfare of pigs was the main objective of a workshop organised by the European Commission on 17 November 2009 in Brussels.
The “Workshop on pig welfare” brought together experts from national administrations, non-governmental organisations and stakeholders directly involved in the implementation of the animal welfare provisions or interested in promoting high animal welfare standards.
Speakers focused on best farming practices that facilitate the better implementation of the existing EU legislation on the protection of pigs and on the recent scientific opinions of the European Food Safety Authority on pig welfare.
The workshop aimed to demonstrate the benefits of implementing EU animal welfare standards throughout the entire pig sector and to encourage stakeholders to recognise the market opportunities created by respecting the consumers’ demands for animal welfare friendly products.
