EU: ban on pork by Russia is a mistake

05-05-2009 | |

The European Commission has addressed Russia in a letter that there is no scientific grounds for banning Spanish pork on the pretext of Mexican flu.

A Commission spokesperson told this today in Brussels, Belgium.

Russia has started to ban imports of live pigs and pork products from Spain. Spain was the first European country to establish Mexican influenza in a human being. Early last week, the disease still was called ‘pig influenza’.

The spokesperson said the EC has been corresponding about the problem since April 27. Up until now, Russia has not replied yet.
