The more attention given to animal welfare at slaughter and better anaesthetic and slaughtering methods, the finer the quality of the end product coupled with lower employment costs, according to a report by the Dutch newspaper Agrarisch Dagblad.
Such were the results of two European Commission reports about anaesthetics in the red meat and poultry sectors.
EU Guideline
These findings will serve as background documentation to the update of the European Union guideline on slaughtering practices.
The reports found that the slaughter of animals is still carried out in a traditional manner using non-animal friendly machinery. In addition, slaughterhouse personnel do not always respect animal welfare. Through better training, this situation can be improved.
The result is better quality meat.
