EU health commissioner Markos Kyprianou will meet the agriculture minister Alexei Gordeyev of Russia today in an attempt to lift the Russian ban on Polish meat exports.
EU chief veterinarians have been discussing the embargo at a technical level with colleagues from Russia and Poland and the Commission is keeping quiet about whether progress is being made.
Hopefully this afternoon they will sign a ‘memorandum of understanding’, containing conditions under which the Russians will promise not to cause any disruption to EU trade after the accession of Romania and Bulgaria, which joined the EU at January 1st.
Earlier this week, Russia still claimed that it was right to ban the imports of some Polish foods.
