End to Bulgarian tradition through EU?

03-01-2007 | |

Those in Bulgaria enjoying tradition might not welcome the country’s EU accession as it means the traditional Sylvester pig slaughtering could come to an end.

EU laws forbid the illicit slaughtering of pigs.

However, people in Bulgaria are used to slaughtering a pig on the last day of the year, thinking having done so the next year will bring nothing but good luck.

It is thought that on the doorstep of 2008 pig slaughterings will continue to exist – despite EU rules.
