Dioxin scandal: German supermarkets demand guarantees

06-01-2011 | |

German supermarkets are asking meat processors for guarantees that the supplied meat does not contain dioxins.

Also for meat that has been delivered the last two weeks the retailers demand laboratory outcomes, one German slaughterer said.

Dioxine results from already supplied meats are not available, simply because it is not a standard control in the meat processing line.

Because of the contaminations that now have been found additional analyses are being carried out. However, these require more time and are not instantly available.

Up until now it has been clear that the levels found are not detrimental to people when contaminated meat is consumed. The levels stay below European maximum levels, German toxicologists said.
