Closure of pork plant leaves 1,200 jobless

By closing down a pork plant in Mississippi, US, food company Sara Lee will lay off almost 1,200 employees.

The closure is part of the company’s restructuring plan.

The pork processing plant and spice production facility, based in West Point, will release its employees when it closes its doors at the end of March.

Not meeting expectations

Ken Brandenburg, the company’s vice president of food and beverage operations announced, “Unfortunately, after looking at our business, we determined that these facilities will not allow us to meet our efficiency or long-term profitability expectations.”

Sara Lee also said an additional 489 jobs will be cut throughout the company though it did not specify in what divisions.
