Chinese order makes US pork plant hurry up

28-09-2007 | |

About 250 employees have been added to John Morrell and Co.’s Sioux City plant to help it satisfy a Chinese 27 million kg pork order.

In the month of August, Smithfield Foods, John Morrell’s parent company, said it reached an agreement with a Chinese trading company for the purchase of 27 million kg of Paylean-free pork, to be delivered by the end of this year.

Paylean is a growth promoter allowed for use in the US, but banned in China.

This week, the plant in Iowa started processing an additional 3,200 swine, or about half of the production of an ordinary shift, in an attempt to help meet the order.
