From 1 January 2006, the use of antibiotic growth promoters in pig feed will be banned in the EU. In Denmark, growth promoters were already withdrawn from the feed in 1999; the prevalence of certain diseases, especially E. coli and Lawsonia, subsequently increased and resulted in an increased use of therapeutic antibiotics. Will the same happen in other member countries? Let’s analyse the Dutch sector as an example.
