Betagro initiates new joint-venture in Japan

As a follow-up to Betagro’s first Japanese joint-venture with Ootoya in 2005, Betagro, one of Thailand’s largest food processors and exporters, has formed a new venture with Japan’s Exa Global Foods Corporation to introduce an authentic ramen chain to tap the growing popularity in Thailand for Japanese food.

Somchai Cherdchaithumrong, Betagro’s director of restaurant business, says this is in line with the company’s policy to expand into the areas that support its core business; “producing and selling chicken and pork.”

Forming joint ventures, as Betagro has done with Ootoya and now Exa, he says, “means that we can receive support from our partners, such as know-how, quality control, and even soup and meat that enable us to offer an original taste.”

With the support from their new Japanese partner, Exa, Betagro has set up a factory to produce noodles and gyoza, a Japanese dumpling, to supply the chain. Gradually increasing the number of Exa ramen outlets, Somchai says he expects it would take three years to establish the business, while gradually increasing the number of outlets to 20. “Then we will consider expanding the business to a franchise format!”
