In the long run, chemical castration is the best alternative to unsedated castration of piglets. This conclusion was drawn at a pig conference in Flanders, the Dutch speaking region of Belgium.
At the conference, visited by scientists, industry representatives, civil servants, vets, farmaceuticals and welfare activists, the conclusion was also drawn that the region will not impose stricter measures than the rest of the European Union.
Altogether six alternatives to unsedated castration were discussed, the Flemish Information Centre for Agri- and Horticulture (VILT) reports.
The discussion was launched only moments before the kick off of one of the country’s larger agricultural shows.
Today, in the Flanders Expo, located in the Belgian city of Ghendt, the fifth edition agricultural show Agriflanders has started. It is the first time the show is lasting for four days.
