Australian ministers to improve pig welfare

20-04-2007 | |

Federal and state agriculture ministers in Australia are expected to sign off on a new animal welfare code for pig producers soon.

The RSPCA wants the code to totally ban sow stalls. Farmers say they are prepared for some limitations on sow stall use, changes to pen sizes and stocking rates. But New South Wales Farmers Federation (NSWFF) spokesman Dugald Walker says if the changes go too far, many will be forced out.

“We’re hoping that the ministers understand the pretty tough time that we’re going through at the moment and they do make decisions based on science, not on hysterics, and the sort of stuff that some of the activists have suggested that ought to be done,” he said.
