Australia: Feral pigs causing bio-security concerns in the spotlight again

Because they have the potential to spread exotic diseases, feral pigs are in the spotlight again.

Bio-security researchers are looking at methods of control. In particular, Dr Steve Lapidge from the Invasive Animals CRC has been creating trials of new methods of control around Australia.

According to Lapidge, the threat that these pigs have©to bio-security remains the same.

“The issue that they amplify the disease and they are not restricted by fences and can often move freely through the landscape means that they are a real risk in terms of disease spread,” said Lapidge.

“But it’s an ever-present risk and something we can’t become complacent about,” he added.
