An opportunistic organism

S. suis infection is an increasingly common cause of losses in all major swine producing countries. It is present on many farms, while the clinical signs of the disease are seen on only some of them. Outbreaks of S. suis infection are increased in herds with co-existing PRRS virus and when immunity is compromised by environmental stress, such as over-crowding or teeth cutting.
