Porcine Postweaning Wasting/Catabolic Syndrome (PWCS): the initial diagnostic investigation

21-10-2010 | | |

Since 2008, veterinarians have reported persistent and sometimes extensive nursery mortality associated with anorexia and weight loss in PCV2-vaccinated pigs1. We have performed a diagnostic investigation in an affected farm and have temporarily named the condition Postweaning Wasting/Catabolic Syndrome (PWCS).

Evidence suggests PWCS is likely infectious. The etiology is unknown, but common porcine pathogens have been ruled out. The objective of this report is to summarize the diagnostic investigation in the PWCS-affected farm.
