New Zealand fears pork imports, disease concerns

The allowance of raw pork imports could threaten the health of New Zealand’s pigs, says the pork industry.

This comes as the Government plans to permit raw pork being imported into the country. The concern is that this would bring in Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) into New Zealand.

According to a media report, NZ Pork is not pleased with the decision by the Ministry for Primary Industries for pig meat to be imported from countries with Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome – NZ pork wants this to be overturned.

NZ Pork chairman Ian Carter says, “We want to protect our pigs from a devastating disease.”

The High Court found in favour of the Ministry in June 2012.
