Mexico: PED causes US pigs to be banned

Recently there have been major concerns regarding porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus that has affected US swine populations. This has caused Mexico to shut the door on live pigs being imported into the country from the US.

The ban does not include pork muscle cuts or pork variety meats – as the virus cannot spread through meat and is no risk to human health.

The National Food Health, Safety and Quality Service (Senasica) urged the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), for technical information regarding PED and also the measures that are being carried out to stop the spread of the virus, said the the Agriculture Secretariat.

At the Mexican border, live pigs will only be cleared on a case-by-case basis. PED was first confirmed by USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) on May 17.
