The Gordon Lawson Ileitis Symposium, a global symposium on Lawsonia intracellularis, will take place on September 16th. The symposium, sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim, features leading speakers from around the world. Topics include pathogenesis, immunity and diagnostics, control and eradication, and knowledge gaps.

Ileitis is one of the most economical devastating diseases for swine producers. On September 16th, leading scientists in the field of ileitis will present the latest state of research regarding the extraordinary bacterium Lawsonia intracellularis. A great opportunity to be up to date, the symposium will take place at the InterContinental St. Paul Riverfront, Minnesota, USA.

You will hear keynote presentations from some of the top researchers from around the world, including:

  • General overview with Dr Connie Gebhart and Dr Steve McOrist. In this section the bacterium and its basic mechanism of disease in swine will be discussed, followed by the remaining big questions;
  • Pathogenesis from Dr Roberto Guedes. How is this bacterium infection swine? And what can we learn from organoids studies regarding infectious pathways;
  • The latest on immunity from Dr Fabio Vannucci. Additional to this the latest developments in how to diagnose (subclinical) ileitis will be discussed including a report to a large-scale intestinal check at slaughter from over 38 batches of pigs;
  • Lessons learned on Lawsonia eradication from Dr Alison Collins. Reports about eradicating Lawsonia are scarce. What are the lessons learned in eradicating attempts of this ubiquitous present bacteria and how to proceed with eradication for the future;

Dr Gordon Lawson was a brilliant microbiologist that discovered and gave his name to Lawsonia intracellularis – organism that causes ileitis.
