ASF Germany: Virus hits farm of 1,800 pigs in Hesse
The African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak in western Germany keeps on claiming victims. The state of Hesse reported that the virus has made its way to a farm of 1,800 pigs, the largest in the west until now.
The farm is the 8th that has been found to be infected in the state of Hesse, all in the district Groß-Gerau. The current farm, the infection of which was confirmed on 30 July, is located near the town of Trebur. The World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) reported this farm to have 971 pigs – perhaps the total tally will rise at a next update.
The owner called in the help of the veterinary authorities when 1 of his animals had died, according to a news release. As a result, the total herd had to be culled.
The farm in Trebur is the 17th farm case in Germany since the virus emerged in the country in 2020. In the rest of Germany, predominantly in the states close to the border with Poland, 9 more farms were infected at an earlier stage.
In the meantime, the virus has also made it to a third district within Hesse state. The district Darmstadt-Dieburg also reported its first 4 infected wild boar. The total amount of casualties in wild boar in Hesse is now at 79, whereas in neighbouring state Rhineland-Palatinate so far 21 infected wild boar have been confirmed.
