EC helps fund Latvia’s ASF prevention programme
The European Commission is helping to fund an African Swine Fever prevention programme in Latvia. This will assist the Latvian Food and Veterinary Service’s measures against ASF.
In order to help prevent the African Swine Fever in Latvia, the European Commission is funding a prevention programme.
The European Commission has given the green light to provide co-funding for the Food and Veterinary Service’s African Swine Fever prevention program, which will go towards prevention measures this year. The amount of €829,000 will be allocated.
Also, the Commission will also cover the entire disinfection costs at border crossings, amounting to €735,000.

€ 80,000 will also be given, which will cover 50% of the cost of laboratory inspections on pigs and wild boars. While €14,000, will go to the making of various information signs at border crossing points.
All vehicles containing live animals and animal feeds entering Latvia’s from infected regions – Russia and Belarus – will need to be cleaned and disinfected and truck drivers will have to declare their vehicles as being cleaned and disinfected before entering Latvia.
According to the Veterinary Service the total amount of funds needed for preventive measures for 2013 and 2014 is €6 million.
