Dutch to trial a pig antibiotics database

30-09-2008 | | |

Several pig organisations in the Netherlands have announced that the launch of an antibiotics database trial is expected before the end of the year.

Essentially, the new tool is expected to give an insight into the real use of antibiotics in the pig industry, the agri- and horticultural organisation LTO and the trade union for pig producers NVV announced.

The database will be linked to network monitoring systems. Eventually, the use of medicine will be registered on the basis of a model for doses per day, developed by Utrecht University’s Faculty of Animal Health.

This will make it possible for pig producers, to compare the medicine use between each other – therefore optimising medicine use.
