ASF outbreak in Volgograd region, Russia
The first outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) this year was registered in Russia on 6 January, according to Rosselkhoznadzor.
The ASF virus was found again in the Volgograd region. According to the report it was discovered in the dead animals at one of the private farms in the Olkhovskoye district. Two weeks ago in the Volgograd region the outbreak of ASF has been reported among wild boars.
To confirm the diagnosis the samples of the carcasses of dead pigs were sent to a laboratory in Pokrov. It is known that the outbreak was registered at the farm with a small herd so major pig cullings will not be needed.
In 2013 the infection spread to the Volgograd region from the neighboring Voronezh and Rostov regions. Last year ASF was reported in nine districts. According to Rosselhoznadzor, so far ASF affected livestock at farms in 181 villages. As a result 13.5 thousand pigs were culled.
The compensation to the farmers amounted to 62 million rubles (US$2mln). Plus, more than 47 million rubles (US$1.5mln) has been allocated by the regional government for the prevention measures against ASF.
